Title: To Suffer, To Care: Becoming a Moral Practitioner in Medicine;

Description: Medicine is typically taught as a science of diagnosis and treatment. This course approaches it differently, treating medicine as a moral and relational practice shaped by daily encounters with suffering, grief, and human vulnerability. At its core, this house course asks: What kind of person do you need to become to care well for others in the face of suffering? Drawing on medical humanities, religion, philosophy, and the arts, we will explore how healthcare practitioners are changed by what they witness — death, uncertainty, injustice, and the limits of what medicine can fix. We will ask: How do we care for patients as persons, not just diagnoses? What does it mean to witness suffering without turning away? How does repeated exposure to grief shape the moral life of a clinician? Through illness narratives, poetry, ethical case studies, end-of-life care discussions, and critiques of modern medicine, students will examine how suffering is expressed and understood. Guest speakers, including clinicians and humanities scholars, will bring these themes into lived practice.
